Detailed Introduction
background:
TIMP Metallopeptidase Inhibitor 1 also known as TIMP1, Tissue Inhibitor of Metalloproteinases, is a glycoprotein expressed from several tissues of an organism. This protein is a member of the TIMP family. This family has four members, TIMP1, TIMP2, TIMP3 and TIMP4. TIMP1 is a glycoprotein with a molecular weight of 28 kDa that is produced by a variety of cell types. The glycoprotein is a natural inhibitor of matrix metalloproteinases (MMPs), a group of peptidases involved in the degradation of the extracellular matrix. In addition to its inhibitory effects on most known MMPs, the encoded protein is able to promote cell proliferation in a variety of cell types and may also have anti-apoptotic functions. Transcription of this gene is highly inducible by many cytokines and hormones. In addition, expression from some but not all inactive X chromosomes suggests that inactivation of this gene is polymorphic in human females. This gene is located within intron 6 of the synapsin I gene and is transcribed in the opposite direction.
Overview:
