background:

Siglecs (sialic acid-binding Ig-like lectins) , a unique subfamily of the Ig superfamily, have a structure similar to adhesion molecules. Here we describe a new member of the siglec protein family that has a similar structure, including five Ig-like domains, a transmembrane domain, and a cytoplasmic portion containing two ITIM signaling moieties. Siglec-10 was discovered by database mining of the EST library of asthmatic eosinophils. The Siglec-10-VAP-1 interaction appears to mediate lymphocyte adhesion to endothelial cells and may alter the inflammatory microenvironment through enzymatic end products .
