Mesothelin (MSLN), also known as CAK1 antigen and pro-megakaryocytic promoting factor, belongs to the mesothelin family. Mesothelin/MSLN can be proteolytically hydrolyzed by furan-like convertase into two chains: megakaryocytic promoting factor (MPF) and the cleavage form of mesothelin. Both MPF and the cleavage form of mesothelin are N-glycosylated. Mesothelin/MSLN can interact with MUC16. The membrane anchor form of MSLN may play a role in cell adhesion. MPF can promote the formation of megakaryocyte colonies in vitro.
