background:

T cell surface glycoprotein CD4 is also known as T cell surface antigen T4/Leu-3. CD4 contains three IgC2-like (immunoglobulin-like) domains and one Ig V-like (immunoglobulin-like) domain. CD4 is an accessory protein for MHC class II antigen/cell receptor interactions. CD4 can induce lipid raft aggregation. CD4 is the main receptor for HIV-1 to enter host T cells. HIV infection causes the number of T cells with CD4 receptors to gradually decrease. Therefore, medical experts refer to CD4 counts to decide when to start treating HIV-infected people.
