background:

Cluster of differentiation 86 (CD86), also known as B lymphocyte activation antigen B7-2, is a type I membrane protein that belongs to the immunoglobulin superfamily and is constitutively expressed on anaplastic dendritic cells, Langerhans cells, peripheral blood dendritic cells, memory B cells, and germinal center B cells. In addition, B72 is expressed at low levels on monocytes and can be upregulated by interferon gamma. CD86 is a ligand for two different proteins on the surface of T cells. CD28 (for autoregulation and cell-to-cell binding) and CTLA-4 (for attenuation of regulation and cell-to-cell separation). CD86 works in synergy with CD80 to provide motivation for T cells. Recent studies have found that B7-2 can promote the generation of mature APC cell populations and promote the function and survival of APCs. In addition, B7 protein is also involved in the innate immune response by activating the NF-κB signaling pathway of macrophages. Therefore, CD86 is considered a promising candidate for immunotherapy. CD86+ macrophages in patients with Hodgkin lymphoma are a potential independent marker of non-response to first-line therapy.
