background:

Membrane mucins have multiple functions in epithelial cells, including cell protection, extravasation during metastasis, maintenance of luminal structure , and signal transduction. MUC17 contains an extended, repetitive extracellular glycosylation domain and a carboxyl terminus with two EGF-like domains, a SEA module domain, a transmembrane domain, and a cytoplasmic domain with potential serine and tyrosine phosphorylation sites. It interacts with PDZK1 through its C-terminus, and this interaction appears to be important for correct localization. It may play a role in maintaining homeostasis at mucosal surfaces.
